- Make sure you can get the pedals off in advance. If they are stuck take your bike to a cycle shop, where they should be able to loosen them in seconds.
- Many new road bikes now come with disc brakes. This is not a problem when packing. The discs may look vulnerable, but they are pretty robust and they are protected by the layer of foam that is placed between the bike frame (in the base of the box) and wheels (which are placed in the lid). See “Packing with Disc Brakes” . Also depending on the size of the discs it may look like the proximity of the disc on one wheel to the tyre on the other may have the potential to cause damage (to the tyre). If the tyre is deflated as instructed there is no real risk of damage, but a strategically placed bit of cloth or bubble wrap should alleviate any concerns in this respect.
- Removal of discs should not be necessary, but if you decide to and have the tools it’s very easy. See removing disc brake rotors.
- If you have thru axels, you may need a set of quick release skewers to secure your wheels to the lid of the box. If you need to borrow some I have a supply, so please let me know.
