The BBA Original box dimensions are approximately 95x116x36. These sizes include quite a bit of slack so if dimensions rather than weight are a determining factor when booking a box you can use the above give or take a couple of centimetres or use the average dimensions of 80x90x30.

Almost all the cyclists who hire from me fly with either British Airways, EasyJet or Ryanair. Here is the information for these three carriers as of May 2022. Please click on the carrier name for further details. I will endeavour to keep this information up to date but please still check when booking. In all cases your bike box will need to be taken to the oversized luggage area after checkin.

British Airways

You can take non-motorised pedal bicycles in a bike cover/box as part of your checked baggage allowance. If you’ve used your free checked baggage allowance, you’ll have to pay to put your bike box in the hold. Note – Most cyclists use their regular 23kg allowance or 32kg if flying business class.

There’s limited hold space on smaller aircrafts so, by telling us in advance, your bike’s more likely to travel on your flight with you. Call us at least 72 hours before you fly as we need to know how big your bike container is and, if possible, how much it weighs. Clothes and other personal items must not be packed in your bike bag/box.

Your bike can be in a heavy-duty polythene bike bag, padded case or hard shell up to 190 x 95 x 65cm (75 x 37.5 x 25.5in). If it’s a non-rigid bag, please make sure the handlebars are fixed sideways and the pedals removed or fixed inwards. It’s also best to reduce tyre pressures.

EasyJet

You can take your bicycle with you but it needs to packed in the following way before it can be put in the aircraft hold:

  • The bicycle must be packaged in a bicycle box or bicycle bag
  • Only one bicycle per box/bag is allowed
  • The handlebars must be flush with the frame
  • Pedals must be removed or flush against the frame
  • No other items can be carried in the bicycle box/bag (i.e. clothing) – Most cyclists pack a lot of extra gear in their box!!

We strongly recommend deflating the tyres and packing the bicycle in a hard case where possible to protect your bicycle during transit.

Ryanair

Bicycles (max weight 30kg), – MUST be contained in a protective box or protective bike bag in order to be accepted for travel. Electric bicycles cannot be transported by plane.
